  1. Look for a good English dictionary on the internet, for example: The Free Dictionary, or Dictionary.com.  Both of these programmes are FREE and they also give you some idea  of the pronunciation.

NOTE:  Most of the pronunciation online is done in American English.  If you would prefer to speak the English from Great Britain, there are other sites that you can look at. Check out our Pronunciation page.

  2. Now you need to buy a bi-lingual dictionary - to carry with you and to use at every possible moment.  You can buy them in several languages: Spanish-English; French-English; German-English,  etc.

  3. Maybe you prefer to use an on-line dictionary – try Word Reference - FREE.  This multi-lingual dictionary converts into at least 17 languages - and If you don't find what you are looking for in any of the dictionaries, you can search or ask in the forums.

O.K. you have used a translation service to understand what is written here,  you have two online dictionaries, one English and one bi-lingual, and you have bought a dictionary to carry with you.

  4. The next step is to find a good grammar book - don't use the first one you see, look around and choose one that you find easy to understand.  A grammar book for children is a good idea - once again, you should be able to find one at Amazon Books or you could try a FREE download from English Banana.

  5. Buy some coloured Post-It Notes next. You can get them from most bookshops and newsagents or you can buy them here - just click on this Post-It Notes link.

  6. You will need to spend some time on this next step.  Get your bi-lingual dictionary, and find the names in English, of all the different pieces of furniture in your house.  Write the names on the Post-It Notes and stick them on every piece of furniture.  As you walk around the house, you should try to memorize the names of the furniture in English.

  7. Now, look up the 'most often used' words in the English language.  You can also find these FREE on the internet.  Here are some lists:
